Websites Your Grandparents Wouldn't Approve Of - Week One: Anonymous & The Dreadful Chan's
Written by Kiwi
Wednesday, 10 June 2009 23:12
WARNING: This article may contain inappropriate language, explicit references and worst of all, references to 4chan.

Hey again folks! We’re now on week one of our new topic and we’re starting with Anonymous and The Dreaded Chan’s. For those of you who have never heard of anonymous or 4chan/the Chan’s, you are probably better off, believe me.

Anonymous is a group of people who hack peoples accounts, create internet meme’s and are generally racist, sexist and any other ‘ist’ related word you can poke a stick at. As all members are anonymous, there are really only a select few who know anything even remotely harmful and the rest are a bunch of 12 year olds who like to feel important.

4chan is one of the many anonymous posting styled image boards which is a collection of image boards themed around Japanese animation and are based on the popular Japanese site 2ch.jp. Both groups are known for their trolls, invasions, meme’s, de-motivator images and much, MUCH more.

So from this point onwards we’re going to delve into this horrible subculture. You can make a decision on whether or not you want to ever see one of these sites or more predictably you will find out how to keep clear. (Check out the glossary at the end for words in their ‘language’ you don’t understand, feel free to comment at the end of the article if I’ve missed anything.)

Fox 11 Investigation - Anonymous

Okay so let’s digest this video and point out a few things for those of you who have never heard of anonymous.

  • By making a documentary or ‘investigation’, you are actually giving these people exactly the exposure they’re after.
  • ‘Hacker gangs’ – VERY few of these people know ANYTHING about programming or hacking. In most cases it’s a bunch of bored teenage nerds who want to feel important or part of something.
  • Using their language and terminology such as ‘destroy’, ‘die’ or the ‘internet hate machine’ makes the whole thing even funnier to these people, even more so when they think you’re scared.
  • SECRET websites? I don’t know about their googling skills but if you put ‘the internet hate machine’, ‘anonymous’ or ‘4chan’ into google, it doesn’t take a genius to find one of the related sites.
  • Most of these attacks and campaigns are trolls or some such way of getting attention.

    Oprah - Over 9000 P******

This video is a classic example of a troll, Oprah and her show have been COMPLETELY sucked into saying ‘over 9000…’ which is exactly what they wanted. The significance being the classic Dragonball Z episode where Vegeta is asked “What does the scouter say about his power level?” in response he says “Over 9000!!!” which now seems to be a classic anime moment. Being an anime related image board, getting anyone to say this anime related punch line is a huge joke. Another interesting piece of information was that Oprah’s email account got hacked shortly after this, needless to say that no one was surprised to find out her password was “popcorn”.

The Infamous /b/
Before you can even BEGIN to understand what /b/ is, you need to come to terms with the boards posting style which these boards have adopted. Each board is assigned a letter which corresponds to a specific topic or purpose e.g. /i/ is invasion or in the case of /b/ it’s random. By random they mean anything goes within reason. (How b = random, I'll never know but I think it's just one of the few letters they had left... so go figure.) The board letters are usually along the top but in the case of the newer layout of 4chan, you have to pick a board by name first. The next question is what type of content gets posted on /b/? and why is it so popular? The truth is, anything goes and anything DOES go on /b/ including stories, rants, hate, racism and every other 'ism' you can think of in every possible shape and form. As you may know, a lot of meme's including rickrolling, caturday and muchmuch more were created on these dreaded image boards which continued to infect the already polluted internet.

How many are there!?!?!
Well theres 12chan, 2chan, 2ch.ru, 24chan, 315chan, 4chan, 420chan, 5chan, 55chan, 7chan, 711chan, 78chan, 8chan, 888chan, AnonIB, BBWchan, Bokuchan, Britchan, Desuchan, Diochan, Fapchan, Fchan, Futabachannel, Gurochan, Konatachan, Kriegchan, Krautchan, not4chan, OPERATORchan, Wakachan, Wikichan, WTFchan and Ychan to name a few... but you'll notice these aren't linked, quite simply because these sites are pretty dodgy and you can seek them out yourself if you so desire.

The Rules of the Internet

Yes believe it or not a set of ‘rules’ for the internet was invented over time by anonymous groups. There are a lot of different versions (Yeah the cleaner of which is below… yes this is the clean version) yet the only agreed upon rules are 1, 2 and 34. (For the record, I know I broke 1 & 2 above.)

What others have said about 4chan
(I'm not posting the site names yet because I intend to review some of them at a later date.)

Gawker.com... once claimed in jest that 'reading /b/ will melt your brain'

The Guardian once summarised the 4chan community as 'lunatic, juvenile... brilliant, ridiculous and alarming.'

I think one this site gives us a nice explanation to end on...
'You have just entered the very heart, soul, and life force of the internet. This is a place beyond sanity, wild and untamed… We are the reason for "not safe for work". We are the anonymous army, cross us and you will fail. Anonymous is everywhere, you depend on us every day, we bag your groceries, we fix your computers. Anonymous sees you before you see him, sitting at desks around the world right now are a nameless, faceless, unforgiving mafia composed of the best of the best.

We are 4channers, the people devoid of any type of soul or conscience, products of cynicism and apathy, spreading those very sentiments daily. Anonymous is the hardened war veteran of the internet, he does not forgive or forget. We have seen things that defy explanations; heard stories that would make any god-fearing, law abiding citizen empty their stomach where they stand. We have experienced them multiple times and eagerly await their return.

4chan is a place of sheer genius and utter stupidity, and there is often a thin line dividing the two, here you will see a state of mind that exists in most human beings, but is rarely if ever shown. This is a place where taboos do not exist; 4chan cannot simply be regarded as a simple website or image board. It is so much more than code; 4chan is alive and constantly changing. This is a subculture, a self-governing sect of the world which is rich in history and foundation. To become a 4chan user is to speak a different language, to leave behind any methods of conventional thinking you once knew.

There are things here that you will not understand and things you never will understand and if you cannot accept this then GTFO now because there is no turning back.

This is 4chan.

This is /b/.
'

Glossary of Terms:

4chan - The most popular among all of the Chan’s and other anonymous related websites, as well as one of the most popular English image boards to date.

Anonymous - Online community of people who lurk in the chans and are all said to be hackers but in reality aren’t.

Lulz - Often used to denote laughter at someone who is the victim of a prank. Can be used as a noun — e.g. "for the lulz" ("for laughs"/"for the hell of it"/"for the Schadenfreude"). This variation is often used on chan image boards. According to a New York Times article about Internet trolling, "lulz means the joy of disrupting another's emotional equilibrium."

Troll - In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.

ITT - In this thread

Copypasta - Content which isn’t original or has been Copy pasted

OP - Original Poster

tl;dr - Too long, don’t read (a sort of summary)

GTFO - Get the f*** out!

Meme - A catchphrase or concept that spreads rapidly from person to person via the internet, largely through email, blogs, social networking sites, and instant messaging. The term derives from the original concept of memes, although it has come to refer to a much broader category of cultural information. Examples include Rickrolling, lolcats, "Leave Britney Alone", Keyboard Cat, Bacon and "All your base are belong to us".

Summary:
In summary I think that after reading this, if you are still that keen on heading on over to 4chan or related chans, you probably don't have to worry about losing any of your integrity, sanity or soul because you simply had none to start with. Material on these sites is guarenteed to make you think of the internet in a different way, horror movies all of a sudden become humerous in their obvious inadequecies. Anyone going to any of these sites need only understand that they can be epic, brilliant and clever but they are also repulsive, redudant, reclusive and any other 'R' word you can think of off the top of your head. Retarded? Well you get the point!

That's the weeks feature article on 'Anonymous and the Dreadful Chans', I hope you enjoyed it, be sure to check the site in two weeks time for the next release. (I have exams so unless one of the admins decides to be nice... you'll just have to wait!) Until then, keep it random, entirely random!

New topic and more
Written by Kiwi

As you know we have come to the end of the introductory 'webcomic' opening week. As of now, releases from me will be once or twice a week which will hopefully give others the motivation to post some content. As most of you are probably bursting to know by now, we have a brand new topic which all my released content will focus around. (Well mostly, no promises ;)) Anyhoo A special thanks to Will for the phrasing but our new topic is:

"Websites your grandparents wouldn't approve of..." -- Don't worry though, we'll keep it as clean as possible folks!

In other websites related news, if you haven't already noticed, the quotes submission feature as well as a random quotes module have been added to the main website which means there is simply no excuse for not submitting anything pretty for us to look at. If any of these systems refuse to let you post content be sure to let me know BUT please keep in mind that everything needs to be approved by a moderator first so the submission process is far from instant. Free hosting should also be available shortly, for now, feel free to email me with hosting requests.

I know this is suppose to be 'website related' news BUT I've decided to make it all in one post to make it easier. You may have noticed a certain amount of downtime on my IRC server (irc.entirelyrandom.net) and I apologize but the shell hositng I use is having a pathetic amount of uptime right now. Don't worry though, I'll be switching to a new provider at the end of the month so bare with me.

Web Comic Week - Day Seven: Between Failures
Written by Kiwi
Sunday, 07 June 2009 15:00
Looks like we made it to Day Seven without missing a single day and I basically got them to you on time, I know it's pretty unbelievable right? Today's web comic is the not so infamous 'Between Failures' which in many ways is a lesser version of the slice of life style of web comic such as Questionable Content. You can tell straight away that it's not in the same league as QC when you notice it's Wordpress powered website and it's noticeably a lot harder to find information on it's history. It's lack of standalone comics is a nice change but it's definitely made it harder for me to find a couple of decent comics which showcase it's style and humour.

It does have a plot and actual characters which is still very appealing in comparison to other web comics. It maintains an interesting dialog, wonderful characters, and a great art style. One of the continuous let downs with comics similar to these, is the fact that it's made by a guy for guys, which seems to be a continued mistake among web comics. The whole comic is centered around Thomas Blackwell who is a clerk in a store. The comics title comes from a quote of his where he says: "life is what happens, between failures." and these comics are the story of his life and associated friends. Information on this particular web comic's creator etc is pretty brief so if anyone finds anything that would add to this, feel free to mention it in the comments section and I may update this. :) On that note, it looks like we've reached the end of our introductory week on web comics! From this point onwards I think I'll bring it back to around 1-2 entries a week and we'll have it over several weeks because otherwise I'm not going to be able to keep up the content! Be sure to come say Hi on our IRC Network, the javalink is on the left in the navigation under "IRC" if you don't have a client. It would also be great if you could shove a link to us in your facebook status or anywhere else because word-of-mouth traffic is always great! :) Keep your eyes open for the next topic... Until next time.. Keep it random... entirely random!

Web Comic Week - Day Six: Questionable Content
Written by Kiwi
Saturday, 06 June 2009 16:03

Looks like we're up to Day Six of web comic week and so far we've been through some of the great and sometimes redundant web comics available out there. Questionable Content takes a slightly different angle in comparison to some of the other web comics we've taken a look at so far. Described as a slice-of-life comic, it focuses on everyday events that could happen to everyone and isn't restricted by one genre. The web comic itself is focused around Marten Reed, his roommate, Faye Whitaker; and Faye's boss, Dora Bianchi. Supporting characters include employees of the local coffee shop and talking computers (Yeah... that talking ipod thing, apparently it's not actually an ipod). Having memorable and generally humerous characters with an actual plot (kind of), gives this comic a nice feel which seems to bring people back again and agian. Not only that, but it also doesn't rely on obscure references or intense technical jargon to keep people reading which is nice because anyone can understand the humour in it.

This web comic is written and drawn by Jeph Jacques and started up on August 1, 2003 with the 1400th strip posted on May 7, 2009. Jacques is also one of the few who actually makes a nice living out of QC merchandising and advertising(believe it or not, some people ACTUALLY click those google ads you see). Righto so if you feel like it I would definately suggest heading over to http://questionablecontent.net because there is some really funny stuff worth taking a look at. I mean they have a TALKING BIRD that is actually sometimes funny, some webcomic authors take a week off when they're out of ideas, but not Jacques. Anyway tomorrow is the last day of web comic week so keep your eyes open!

Web Comic Week - Day Five: CTRL+ALT+DEL
Written by Kiwi
Friday, 05 June 2009 18:30
Wow, it seems we're at Day Five of Web Comic week here at entirelyrandom.net! I know what you're thinking, I actually have managed to release all five reviews on the actual day this week without fail, I was impressed too. Anyway moving right along...

Today's web comic is none other than the infamous Ctrl+Alt+Del(CAD) which is incredibly similar to Penny Arcade with it's gaming related themes and pursuits. The main difference is that Ctrl+Alt+Del maintains longer story arks, especially recently, while still using the shorter, single strip based comics on occasion. The name Ctrl+Alt+Del comes from the windows shortcut and although it's not particular specified, the shortcut usually refers to when everything is going wrong so maybe that has certain relevance to the web comic? Take a look and maybe you can tell us what you think in the comments section.

Written by Tim Buckley, the comics after being published in several major publications as well as having been made into several comics, now has several animated series available for those who are willing to pay to subscribe. Like the authors of Penny Arcade, Tim is able to live off the proceeds of his comic and does not work. Clean artwork with a combination of great gaming references which are standalone and applicable to anyone who isn't a gamer as well as real life issues, including addiction to MMORPG's etc. This comic is one of the top webcomics out there and up there in terms of review based gaming media. Head on over to http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com if this type of webcomic appeals to you! Keep your eyes open for Day Six and Seven which have our final two comics for the week, and next weeks topic will be announced on Sunday so stay tuned!

Aik's Curious Programming Blog
Written by Kiwi
Friday, 05 June 2009 16:38

Now I KNOW we're in the middle of web comic week BUT I'm going to take this quick post to mention one of our regular IRC chatter's blogs. It's relatively new but for those of you who like to delve into the complicated world that is computer programming, you might want to take a look! Now I'm not exactly a huge expert on programming as most of you know but this guy who I might add is only 15, is doing some pretty awesome stuff and he's using this blog to post some of the more complicated things he's doing (Well they look pretty complicated to me!). Anyhoo as he is one of 'us' it would be great to get a few comments and feedback either here or on his site so that we can encourage him to turn out some more interesting pieces of programming knowledge. So go look! NOW! http://aiks-curious-programming.blogspot.com

On a sidenote, thanks to will, I'm pretty sure we have some forum rules available now so please go take a look before you post anything. There is also a quotes database in the making so feel free to login and add a couple of your own :) Keep your eyes open for the next web comic review released tonight!

Web Comic Week - Day Four: Penny Arcade
Written by Kiwi
Thursday, 04 June 2009 15:43
We're onto Day FOUR of web comic week here at entirelyrandom.net! Today's belated post is about the popular gaming based web comic available for your viewing pleasure at penny-arcade.com. This comic is extremely popular because of it's often sarcastic and cynical attitude towards new gaming consoles, newly released games and basically anything gaming related. Some have described it as a static "Zero Punctuation", an animated series that critiques new games. The web comic itself is written by Jerry Holkins and illustrated by Mike Krahulik who have their own alter-ego representations in many of the comics.

Penny-arcade has received places in time, entertainment weekly as well as MTV Online which named the authors as two of the world's most influential gamers, saying "they have become the closest the medium has to leaders of a gamers' movement." 1UP.com described it as "the One True Gaming webcomic". This duo delivers a quality piece of artwork with decent clear humour that appeals to most members of the gaming community while at the same time the references are not so obscure that they exclude new members who know nothing about gaming. Keep your eyes open for our next web comic tomorrow on Day FIVE!
